Hydrogen in rheumatism: Studies show potential for reducing inflammation and oxidative stress

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that not only leads to progressive joint destruction but also significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. A key therapeutic approach is to control systemic inflammation to alleviate symptoms and prevent secondary diseases such as atherosclerosis. Modern medications have improved treatment but are often associated with side effects—which is why complementary, well-tolerated approaches are increasingly coming into focus.

A crucial factor in the development and progression of RA is oxidative stress, triggered by so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS). These attack cell structures and amplify inflammatory processes via signaling pathways such as the NF-κB pathway and TNF-α. The hydroxyl radical—one of the most aggressive ROS—is particularly damaging. This is precisely where molecular hydrogen (H₂) comes into play: studies show that H₂, as a selective antioxidant, can specifically neutralize these highly reactive molecules without affecting important physiological processes.

The use of hydrogen – both as inhalation and in the form of hydrogen-rich drinking water – is increasingly being scientifically investigated. Results indicate that H₂:

• can significantly reduce oxidative stress
• positively influence inflammatory processes
• can support the effects of conventional therapies
• shows therapeutic potential, particularly in the early stages of the disease

Through these effects, hydrogen can not only contribute to symptom relief but may also slow the progression of the disease and prevent associated conditions such as arteriosclerosis.
