Water management experts warn about the risks of so-called forever chemicals PFAS from industry. They particularly emphasize the high levels of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment, including groundwater, lakes and rivers.
The German Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) and the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW) have presented a study on the pollution of mineral and tap water. Scientists at the US Geological Survey have found PFAS chemicals, also known as “forever chemicals,” in groundwater and surface water around the world and recorded them in a study. This illustrates the widespread presence of these chemicals. There is an urgent need to protect people, the environment and nature from the negative effects. A comprehensive ban on PFAS is seen as essential, emphasize BUND and BDEW.
Dangers in drinking water with PFAS: But how to avoid them?
The PFAS chemicals have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, thyroid disease, changes in sex hormones, impaired kidney function and lower birth weight.
