What helps against limescale in the water?
Free tap water of good, tested quality is an important basis for a good standard of living. Nevertheless, some components in the water that are undesirable or not tested are interfering. Many people complain about too much lime in the water. A combination of magnesium and calcium results in lime, dissolved as salts in water, otherwise it could not be bound in water. The result is limescale deposits that become visible in kettles, faucets, shower walls or glasses and can lead to problems in household appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers or in coffee machines. We want water that is as soft as possible, i.e. with a low degree of hardness. There are different water filters for this. Ion exchangers are effective, but the exchange is putting salt in the water, not the best solution for some who want pure water. Water filters specially designed as limescale filters are effective and inexpensive, but the filter cartridges must be changed after a few months.
A useful addition: There are also filter inserts specially designed as bacterial filters for these water filters. This is a welcome help, especially with frequent decoctions in the event of a bacterial alarm. The filter housings with different filter inserts can either be operated specifically for the connection of a dishwasher and washing machine or on the tap in the kitchen or with several filter units one behind the other.
Magnesium and calcium as minerals yes, as calcium deposits no thanks
The minerals magnesium and calcium are essential for our body, mainly for our bones and muscle tissue. These minerals are best absorbed by humans in their pure form from food, which in this way can be easily metabolized and reach the places in the body where they are needed. Cheese products, vegetables, seeds, stones and much more contain a lot of minerals. Just like mineral water, tap water contains a certain amount of minerals that are dissolved as salts. However, it cannot cover the daily requirement. In purely mathematical terms, you would have to drink up to 10 liters of water or more to consume the recommended daily values, regardless of the bioavailability. The mineral compounds in the water can even be detected using a TDS tester, because the salt compound is responsible for conducting electricity in the water.
How do you remove substances other than lime and bacteria?
One reads more and more often about components in the water that have a disturbing effect. Residues of medication, drugs and hormones or hormone-like substances that can affect fertility, among other things. Pesticides get into the groundwater through chemical fertilizers. Waterworks are often unable to cope with removing these substances. In addition, according to the Drinking Water Ordinance, only 40-50 substances have to be tested and the ones mentioned at the beginning are not included.
Reverse osmosis technology is suitable for removing these substances. It works like a sieve and removes even the smallest substances that are larger than water molecules and that is almost all. This removes not only drugs, etc., pesticides, nitrates, but also viruses and even radioactive substances. So a very pure type of filtering. Unfortunately, these filter devices are expensive to manufacture – at least if they are made from the purest materials in accordance with applicable consumer protection regulations. The prices for such devices are based on the performance values.
