Researchers have demonstrated widespread contamination of bottled water with xenohormones leaching from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles. Germany: A panel of subjects showed widespread contamination of mineral water with xenohormones leaking from PET plastic bottles, which have potent estrogenic activity and can be carcinogenic in the consumer’s body. According to a study, anyone who drinks the recommended daily amount of water from plastic bottles ingests around 90,000 plastic particles per year in this way alone.

A data set on the release of plastic particles from infant formula bottles was recently published showing values between 14,600 and 4,500,000 MPs (>1 µm) ingested per capita per day.

Problem with baby milk: When mixing milk powder with hot water of at least 70°C, shaking and cooling to feeding temperature puts thermal and mechanical stress on the bottle material, which could further aggravate micro- and nanoplastic particle (MNP) release.
