Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFC) or also called perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) or PFT (perfluorinated surfactants) are man-made chemicals that have dirt, water and grease-repellent properties. They are used in clothing, household products, waterproofing sprays and many other everyday products. They are short- and long-chain molecules made up of carbon atoms combined with fluorine atoms.<\/p>\n

These substances were accidentally<\/strong> discovered in drinking water at the waterworks after PFC\/PFAS from groundwater was contaminated by compost fertilizer used in agriculture, with waste from the paper industry (2004, 2006). Since then, the massive problem has been known. According to the manager of a waterworks in a town of 50,000 inhabitants in Germany, the filters of the waterworks cannot do anything against PFCs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    In agriculture, PFC\/PFAS have been detected in cereals, many types of vegetables and fruits, among other things<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>

    How dangerous are PFC\/PFAS for humans and the environment?<\/h3><\/div>

      We have no knowledge of how PFC\/PFAS behave in the environment, it has only been known to be a problem since 2006. From an environmental-toxicological point of view, there are no analytical methods to detect all substances in the environment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li>

      Manufacturers and importers are not obliged to declare how many substances are contained in the materials of the products. Calculations are hardly possible.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li>

      There is no knowledge of how many substances are in the environment, how they spread and it is not possible to estimate to what extent they enter the food chain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li>

      The impact on the environment is unknown as no analytical methods exist.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>

      <\/i><\/span>PFC\/PFAS are a toxicological problem for the environment and for humans. Accumulations are determined via human biomonitoring. Those affected have levels of up to 15 \u00b5g\/l in the blood. From 10 \u00b5g\/l, these values lead to an increase in cholesterol levels. It is then advisable to have medical tests carried out.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

      So why are these substances allowed?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>

      The substances have been in use for 50 years, and suspected cases have so far been picked up. The burden of proof now lies with the manufacturers. When it comes to the rating, however, you can’t keep up. Thousands of chemicals can be contained in the water<\/strong> and would first have to be recognized, but due to the quantity, this is only carried out using indicator substances, which then only allow conclusions to be drawn. Official limit values cannot yet be determined.<\/p>\n<\/div>
